  • Bio

Death Row Records was founded in 1992 by the now CEO of the label, Suge Knight, and former president Andre "Dr Dre" Young. In the words of Suge, "What we brought to the table was a dream, and an insatiable entrepreneurship that the ghettos of America all have. Death Row Records is more than simply a label - it is a family and a way of life." Death Row defined a new music genre in the 1990's -- West Coast Gangsta Rap. It was to become the most controversial but at the same time popular music to occur in the music industry at that time. Much of Death Row Records' music chronicles the observations and experiences of young African-America, often describing situations which occur in the urban ghettos of America. As a result it is now a music of mass youth appeal and strength... On another level, and more importantly, Death Row's West Coast style, (creating controversy emitting from the infamous West/East Coast rap rivalry). has hit the headlines because of the success of it's principal artists, most notably Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg and 2Pac. All of whom have 'crossed over' from appearing regularly on the rap charts to noticeable appearances on the rhythm and blues charts, and in addition entering the pop charts bringing Death Row a more mainstream acceptance... Death Row now licensed to RWP outside of the US, is one of the most successful labels in the rap industry. .. .. Leaving you with words from Suge on Death Row's Greatest Hits - "With this album we share with you the ingredients that made Death Row successful. We hope that you share our enthusiasm for what is yet to come. Good listening and good looking out." Suge .. .. .. ..
