    ...... .. Amazingly, I can't remember the last time I listened to a truly promising new band from France (of course, that could just be the failing memory talking). And I'm not talking about new stuff from the usual suspects (see: Air, Phoenix, Justice) or classic stuff from old favorites (see: Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy). After all, there is a rather unfortunate reputation France seems to hold when it comes to not putting out much in the way of music. Film, food, and wine seem to be the traditional areas in which France historically has and continues to excel. But lo and behold, here comes a new French band, full of indie-flavored, dreamy dancepop (or, "kinetic pop" as they call it). The Five Red Flags, the latest record by Morning Favorites, is what I like to call tres jolie. On their Myspace page, the band cites "stuff what happens" as their influence. Translate their bio into English and you'll get a mass of nonsensical, almost maniacal verbiage. But turn on The Five Red Flags, and the translation is clear. Good music transcends the language barrier, friends. First track "Closed Up In A Star" takes starry-eyed, poppy rhythms and presents itself in the icy coolness of slick production. The explosion of big beatiness near the end is as cool as the other side of the pillow, making this the first of many surprisingly delightful songs. There's something poignant about the remembrances in "That's How It Is", with the delicate strums of the acoustic that give way to a full, rich sound. The French have such a way with words, even when they're being sung in a language other than their native tongue (Morning Favorites sing in English, which is kinda nice for us who are less than skilled with the Language of Love). "All Along The Distance (1033)" has a slow, saucy little intro, and some pretty fresh bedroom vocals, too. Not a bad little groove, I must say. Nor is "Seven & Seven & Seven", another slow-burning groove with a warm, lazy bass beat and some shimmering guitar. It's definitely one of my favorites. I didn't know what to expect from Morning Favorites, but I was very pleasantly surprised. There's definite promise here, and The Five Red Flags shows a flair for making pretty good music. It's a little bit of everything, trancey grooves, Britpop-inspired indie, and well-worn, comfortably ethereal French dancepop. All in all, not too shabby. I'm looking forward to seeing what else this band has to offer. L'histoire: Morning Favorites est ne a Draguignan dans le Var le 10 janvier 2005. Issue de familles musicales diverses, rock, underground, pop, electronica, psychedelic, il faudra quelque temps afin que le groupe se debarasse de ses attaches et trouve sa propre identite. Morning Favorites passe son enfance dans une chambre froide reconvertie en local de répétition. Avec leur van, ils partent en tournée en France, à Nice d'abord, puis à Marseille, Toulon, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand, puis dans un pensionnat en Suisse.     Une fois n'est pas coutume, en ce dimanche 15 janvier, une joyeuse fête aux deux Rémi... et puis, je réalise aussi que l'âge de raison des Morning Favorites, si tant est que l'on puisse vous avoir qualifiés de déraisonnables par le passé, ce dont je doute beaucoup, a sonné ce mardi ! Alors joyeux anniversaire à tous, mais aussi bien sûr... 
      !
    Et vous qui êtes toujours fiers et amoureux de votre MySpace cette année, ce dont je vous félicite, comme l'atteste la date de votre dernière connexion, n'oubliez pas de checker justement votre partie 'Infos générales', afin de corriger ce qui apparaît dorénavant comme un ramassis inintelligible, tout du moins pour le commun des mortels, de langage de prog', tel que je vous l'avais recommandé en novembre... ;-)

    Avec quelques heures de retard ce mardi matin, mais le cœur y est : Joyeux anniversaire MySpacieux les Morning Favorites... Shall I say 'Happy Sixth Red Flag' ? I think so :)
     
    C'est que je continue à savourer cette chronique des Enfants Terribles : 'the Language of Love'... what a magnificent way to refer to French !! ;-) Et si 'Closed up in a Star' possède des rythmes 'starry-eyed', cela revient à dire que parmi le fameux 'stuff that happens', vous pouvez donc revendiquer a posteriori Ellie Goulding dans vos influences... sur l'une de vos chansons qui 'squattait' déjà votre player (n'y voyez surtout aucune connotation péjorative, c'est juste du langage d'Émouvu :) avant même qu'elle n'apparaisse dans les charts : alors si ça, c'est pas le comble de l'artistisme, comme dirait mon ami l'étoile rouge du HibOO... !!!

    Ah par contre, il conviendra de faire une nouvelle fois preuve de créativité, justement, en vue de restaurer la partie 'Similaire à', qui en a pris un coup au moment du passage en version 3 !!
