  • Bio

A fresh and prolific funk quartet on the bristol club scene, the initiative have made a beeline from 60s funk groove thru 70s brown-esque impact arrangements to hip hop's hard breaks. A combination of reinterpreted dancefloor classics and aptly conceived originals combine in a seriously dynamic live show and studio output alike. An "almost legendary" impromtu party performance alongside the Haggis Horns and an array of the Bristol funk scene afficionados recently at the golden lion capped a busy run of recent live outings in the south west. A short tour in the north of France earlier in 2008 also saw the initiative accompany 'The Sweet Vandals' on stage in an evening of serious funk in Tourcoing. As well as the busy list of live dates on this page (including a residency of weekly funk at the golden lion alongside DJ Skint and Guests), look for new releases later this year...

  • Sounds Like

comparisons have been made from beastie boys to the meters, with a peppering of soul and the sound of 60s detroit...the structural excursions of the live sound have been likened to heavier 60s beat and psychedelic jazz mentalities and even the doors...have a listen and make your own mind up. REVIEW. 'wild and hard' [the guardian'09]. 'jamming out an arousing take on British funk, two saxophonists enter by the third number, while watching the drummer and keyboard player is a visual treat, and like a portable microwave, they know how to bring the heat. Abundant in atmosphere but never sickly like cake icing, seldom have I ventured to the cellar when the vibes have been this spectacularly intense. Manfredi Funk Initiative are at their best when the instruments are left to ornament and careen wildly - the saxophone sections in particular, and distilled to the most vital levels of conditioning.'
