"Canadien multi-instrumentiste et compositeur, Id Guinness sort son premier album en 2007, une production qui lui a valu beaucoup d'éloges grâce à sa façon sophistiquée d’approcher la musique à dominante rock. Au printemps 2010, il revient pour la deuxième fois, à la découverte des limites de la musique entre art et rock dominant, sous la forme de « Soul Envy». Les compositions présentées sont toutes de la variété relativement courte, avec juste une seule chanson d’une durée d’à peine plus de 5 minutes sur cet album. La structure de la composition est plutôt simple, peu de déplacements en rythme et avec un nombre limité de thèmes et de motifs explorés. Alors que les similitudes ne sont pas trop évidentes, je décrirais l'approche générale comme contenant des similitudes avec des artistes tels que The Beatles, REM et - dans une certaine mesure - Chris Rea. Les arrangements sont le facteur qui ajoute des niveaux de sophistication en qualité et en force. Synthés flottants, cordes, orgue et une touche de son-mellotron occasionnelle sont ajoutés à sa façon de créer. À certaines moments quand des textures subtiles sont sous-mixées, il y a ajout des détails mineurs à la tapisserie du son, à d'autres occasions, en forme de riches ornements multicouches et parfois de manière dominante, arrive le principal motif musical ou le thème. On pourrait faire ici référence à la fin des années 1970, à une influence nuancée de Pink Floyd concernant les compositions de ses chansons, à des éléments symphoniques, ainsi qu’à des espaces teintés, présentés de manière chaleureuse et fine. Dans l'ensemble c'est un album très intéressant , où ma préférence va vers la piste de « Back of My Hand » qui se détache des autres compositions. Id Guinness | Myspace Music Videos.....Canadian multi-instrumentalist and composer Id Guinness released his debut album back in 2007, a production that earned him quite a lot of praise with it's sophisticated take on mainstream rock music. In the spring of 2010 he returned with his second effort exploring music residing in the borderlands between mainstream and art rock in the shape of "Soul Envy". The compositions presented are all of the relatively brief variety, with just one song clocking in at just over 5 minutes in length. The compositional structure is rather straight forward, few shifts in pace and with a limited number of themes and motifs explored. And while the obvious similarities aren't too many, I'd describe the general approach as one containing similarities with artists such as The Beatles, REM and - to some extent - Chris Rea. The arrangements is the factor that adds levels of sophistication to his endeavours. Floating synths, strings, organ and the occasional mellotron-sounding layer are added to the proceedings. On some occasions as subtle downmixed textures adding minor details to the sonic tapestry, on other occasions in the shape of rich multilayered and at times dominating embellishments to the main musical motif or theme. Late 70's Pink Floyd can probably be called upon as a point of reference for this aspect of the compositions, containing both symphonic and space-tinged elements presented in a warm and sophisticated manner. All in all it's an interesting album too, where my personal taste goes towards the track Back of My Hand as the standout track amidst many solid efforts.
