Rural roots, urban rock and tribal trance are the main ingredients of the new blues recipe brewed by Hell¹s Kitchen, with a little help from Rodolphe Burger <former leader of legendary European underground band Kat Onoma, noless. The surrealistic Swiss group fuses post-industrial influences and gutbucket blues with primal, hypnotic energy, light years away from the bland politically correct sounds of FM radio, from the creative vacuum of soulless virtuosity. Regardless of its non-EU origins, Hell¹s Kitchen proudly boasts European roots and American influences on this mindboggling piece of recording. Hell¹s Kitchen is Bernard Monney on vocals and guitar, Cédric Taillefert on drumcussion (as this musical blacksmith calls his idiosyncratic drum kit) and Christophe Ryser on the double bass. In addition to their respective instruments, the three compadres are likely to be heard beating on ventilation ducts, mauling dry pasta, throwing objects, pounding on dustbin lids, rubbing washboards, and grating washing machine tumblers while screaming, howling and stomping their feet. "Dress to Dig", the title track from the album, is a perfect example of the group¹s frenzy as they can be heard torturing a frying pan, a glass, a garden chairs. The fourth musketeer rounding up this unlikely trio played a leading role in the making of this recording : Rodolphe Burger, with a slew of experimental projects to his credit, has worked in the past with artists as diverse as French rockstars Jacques Higelin and Alain Bashung, free jazz and blues guitarist James Blood Ulmer, and others. Burger added his own production touch as the mixing sessions of Dress to Dig were in the making, the members of the group recall: ³For six straight days, he gave us the very best of his talent and inventiveness! He was the one who really picked up the raw meat we had on our plates and cut it up into pieces, spiced it and grilled it to perfect tenderness. This encounter of the third kind between the young Swiss group and the seasoned underground rock star is not as surprising as it may seem, Hell¹s Kitchen bringing strong European flavors to the most American of New World musical idioms with a flair and spunk lacking most blues devotees outside ofnthe US. Much like reggae and bossa nova, karate or yoga, blues has become an international commodity, and glory be to those, outside of the African-American community, who manage to grace it with a dose of their own culture and experience. Shying away from smooth vocals and guitar heroics, the members of Hell¹s Kitchen see themselves as musical pioneers, modern-day sorcerers feeling free to innovate in the lab. Their ultimate goal, far from the polished and aseptic blues sounds currently produced today, is to give the genre back its original relevance, entrancing spirit, and vibrant energy. Yet Hell¹s Kitchen doesn¹t limit its repertoire to blues. In addition to Rodolphe Burger, other artists have expressed their interest for their vision, including singer guitarist Tété, who has appeared on stage with the group. A recording project with Bashung was also in the works, unfortunately interrupted by the latter¹s death. For the past few years, Hell¹s Kitchen has been burning up European highways, making weel-received appearances in Russia, England, Italy, or Portugal at festivals like Eurockéennes and Paléo. The trio has been offered to perform at the Deep Blues Festival near Minneapolis<the king of neo trash blues events<on two occasions, and intends to keep on preaching its special brand of blues across the planet in the near future. Let there be no doubt, Hell¹s Kitchen¹s nostalgia-laden echoes and contemporary sounds are here to stay! Racines rurales, rock indus urbain et transe tribale, le nouveau blues des Cuisiniers du Diable co-réalisé par un ex Kat Onoma (Rodolphe Burger himself) est arrivé… Ce groupe helvète et surréaliste fait fusionner des influences post-industrielles avec le blues qu'il ramène à son énergie primitive par un côté tribal, lancinant et hypnotique, à des années lumières du son FM, de la virtuosité et des redites. Bien que toujours en dehors de la CEE, voici un groupe résolument européen sans complexe "non américain", et un album totalement , c'est à dire : Bernard Monney (chant & guitare), Cédric Taillefert (percuterie - c'est le forgeron-chaudronnier du groupe) et Christophe Ryser (contrebasse) n'hésitent pas à enrichir le son de leurs instruments de base en tapant sur des conduits de ventilation, en malaxant des pâtes alimentaires et en lâchant des objets qui s'écrasent au sol. Les couvercles de poubelle, le washboard, les tambours bluffant…! Les Hell's Kitchende machine à laver font partie également de leurs instruments habituels. Le tout est généralement ponctué de coups de talon, de cris et de hululements. Sur "Dress to Dig", c'est une poële à frire, un verre à dent et une chaise de jardin qui ont été martyrisés. Mais un quatrième individu s'est largement investi dans ce nouvel album. Il s'agit de Rodolphe Burger, ex Kat Onoma qui a réalisé (entre autres) le dernier album de Jacques Higelin, un album de James Blood Ulmer, a collaboré avec Bashung et qui s'investit souvent spontanément dans des démarches musicales à tendance expérimentales. Il est venu pendant la semaine de mixage de "Dress to Dig" et a assuré un travail de co-réalisation remarquable. D'après le groupe, "Il s'est totalement investi dans le projet durant ces 6 jours et a été exceptionnel d'inventivité et de talent ! – Il a joué le rôle de celui qui s'amuse à couper, relever, épicer, bref passer au grill, 12 morceaux livrés bruts dans leurs assiettes..." Mais cette collaboration entre un groupe bleu et suisse déjanté et cette star underground du rock hexagonal est moins surprenante qu'elle n'en a l'air car Hell's Kitchen apporte au blues d'outre-atlantique une contribution clairement européenne et ignore totalement le complexe fréquent des non-americains qui flirtent avec ce style musical. Le blues appartient à tout le monde aujourd'hui, comme le reggae ou la bossa nova, le judo ou le yoga. C'est normal qu'il évolue avec l'époque, les nouveaux pays qui se l'approprient et le vécu et la culture de ceux qui la jouent. Nous sommes là loin des voix policées et des guitar heroes mais plutôt dans un monde de jeunes musiciens en laboratoire débordant d'inventivité et de vitalité. Ils ramènent le blues, qui s'égare souvent ces jours-ci dans la FM, la virtuosité et les redites, à son énergie primitive et lui redonnent un côté tribal, lancinant, hypnotique. Leur style musical dépasse largement le cadre traditionnel du genre et des musiciens d'univers très différents se sont intéressés à eux. Outre Rodolphe Burger, Tété, par exemple, apprécie le groupe et ils ont déjà joué ensemble sur scène. Il y a eu dans l'air également un projet de collaboration avec Bashung pour travailler sur les arrangements de son ex-futur album "Bleu Pétrole". Pour finir, rappelons que Hell's Kitchen a déjà sillonné l'Europe (Russie, Angleterre, Italie, Portugal…), a été invité par nombre de festivals importants (Les Eurockéennes, Paléo…) et qu'on leur a proposé deux fois le Deep Blues Festival près de Minneapolis (le top des festivals neo-trash blues américain). Il semble donc qu'ils n'ont pas fini de prêcher la bonne parole à travers le monde. Entre échos nostalgiques et fulgurance contemporaines Hell's Kitchen va donc continuer à tracer sa voie, celle de l'innovation…!
